Mortality and Causes of Deaths 2022

The mortality and causes of death (MCOD) datasets are based on information captured from the South African civil registration system. All death notification forms from Department of Home Affairs (DHA) for deaths that occurred in 2022 are covered.

While the statistical release excludes stillbirths, which are also collected through the civil registration system using the same death notification form, the time-series data contains all deaths records captured.

The causes of death are classified using the International Classification of Diseases codes. Furthermore, the underlying causes are derived from the individual causes.
